Chapter Sixteen

Monica compromising

“Doctor Wu, I presume?”

Monica Wu put down the magazine she had been flipping through and stood. She flipped a lock of hair out of her eyes and tugged the bottom of her blouse to straighten it.

“Please, Doctor Cheek,” she said, extending her hand. “Call me Monica.”

The older scientist smiled and shook her hand. “Forgive me, but I won’t. Your credentials are quite impressive. There are a lot of lesser minds here and I want them to treat you with the respect you’ve earned.”

Monica said nothing, but she stood up a little straighter. It wasn’t every day someone with Shermon Cheek’s intellect paid her a compliment.

“How’s the weather?” Cheek asked. “Pardon the banality but I haven’t set foot outside the complex in three days.”

“It’s lovely,” she said. “I didn’t even need a jacket. You should take a break and go up.”

“Ah. That would be ill-advised at the moment.”

Monica blushed. “Of course. I’m sorry. I forgot.”

“About me being a wanted man?” He waved his hand. “A trifling inconvenience. But now that we’re on the subject...”

He gestured towards the orange pleather chair Monica had been sitting in. She sat back down and he took the identical seat on the other side of the glass coffee table. They were in a small reception area, with dull brown paneled walls and an ugly gray carpet. They were deep underground, so there were no windows to brighten the place up.

“Horrible room, isn’t it?” Cheek said. “This used to be part of the original complex, back when it was the Amalgamated Synergy server farm. The renovation was a rush job. If I knew how much time I’d be spending down here I’d have insisted on greater creative input into the décor. The whole bunker is done up like a seventies rec room.”

“You were involved in the renovation?”

“I stuck my nose in,” he said. “But back to the matter at hand. You know my history?”

Monica nodded. “I’m aware of what was in the news this past January. The deaths that you were linked to.”

“And before that?”

Monica hesitated. “There were rumors. Nothing proven. Financial improprieties. Secret experiments. A lab assistant who disappeared.”

“The lab assistant was an accident,” Cheek said. “I don’t treat my colleagues callously. The rest is all true.”

She was aware of how closely Cheek was watching her. Gauging her reaction. She struggled to keep any sign of emotion off her face.

“I see,” she said.

“This doesn’t bother you?”

She met his gaze. “I’m not entirely comfortable with it.”

He nodded. “But...?”

“But...when Mr. Keaka recruited me, he showed me just a tiny fraction of the work you’ve been doing here. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be a part of it.”

“Why not? You have no code of ethics?”

Monica was taken aback. She suddenly felt like she was interviewing for a job she thought she had already been hired for.

“Of course I have a code of ethics,” she said. “But nothing is black and white. What’s happening here is important, and it can’t happen without you. Should the world
